Our History

Cuidando Los Niños was born out of a powerful idea: that every child, regardless of circumstance, deserves a safe place to learn, grow, and thrive. In 1988, a group of compassionate community leaders came together with a bold vision to serve children and families experiencing homelessness in Albuquerque.

What began as a simple outreach effort has grown into a transformative program that provides high-quality early childhood education, supportive housing, case management, and parent education. For more than 35 years, Cuidando has remained rooted in hope, resilience, and the belief that change is possible—one family at a time.

Over the years, we’ve operated from several locations throughout the city to meet the evolving needs of the community—including sites at the Rio Grande Presbyterian Church, the old school on Edith Blvd., and now our current campus on Bell Avenue. At each stop, we’ve continued to strengthen our commitment to helping children and families build a path to lasting stability.

Today, the need is greater than ever. But our mission remains the same: to break the cycle of homelessness for children and families in Albuquerque. As we look to the future, we are more determined than ever to bring hope, opportunity, and support to those who need it most.

A Legacy Story

A proud alumnus of Cuidando Los Niños, Sully grew up in a single-parent household in Albuquerque, where his mother relied on Cuidando during one of the most difficult seasons of their lives. The organization offered not just early education but a lifeline—providing housing support, parenting classes, and advocacy that helped them build a stable foundation for the future.

Now based in Los Angeles, Sully is a thriving brand marketing strategist who has worked with major companies like Honda, Barbie, GNC, and Tylenol. He currently advises B2C brands through an in-agency consultancy and is now stepping into the nonprofit space, recently partnering on a project with the Gates Foundation.

Sully continues to credit Cuidando for its early role in his success and is excited to give back however he can—offering his expertise and heart to support the next generation.
